Introduction
The Induction to Teaching in Tertiary Education is mainly designed for teachers who are new to the self-financing tertiary education sector. It aims at providing a general picture of the sector, including the position of the sector in the Hong Kong education system, expectations of the target students and the working environment.
Programme Structure
There are three sessions of two hours each making a total of six hours. The focuses and learning outcomes of the three sessions are as follows:
Session 1 (two hours): The learning and teaching at the self-financed sub-degree sector in Hong Kong
After the session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the position of the self-financed sub-degree sector within the Hong Kong education system
- Identify the common expectations and learning styles of sub-degree students
- Recognize the learning environment of the sub-degree sector
Session 2 (two hours): Basic instructional design
After the session, participants will be able to:
- Classify factors which underpin the design of learning activities
- Explain that different persons will learn differently
- Define at least one model in designing learning activities
- Design a learning activity of his/her own choice
Session 3 (two hours): Basic Instructional skills
After the session, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least two different forms of instructional skills (e.g. lecture and project learning)
- Explain the pros and cons in choosing different instructional skills
- Demonstrate competences in using at least one chosen instructional skills
